Devude Gelichadu (1976) is a Telugu Feature film (remake of the Malayalam Feature Film “Yakshaganam” featuring Prem Nazir & Sheela) starring Krishna, Vijaya Nirmala, Anjali Devi & Jaggaiah. Actress Vijaya Nirmala wrote the screenplay and directed the movie. Pasupuleti Ramesh Naidu composed the musical score. The showcased track here reminds of a intense solo violin track of Itzhak Perlman (John Williams – Schindlers List).

Pasupuleti Ramesh Naidu (born in Kondapalli, Andhra Pradesh) is a music composer, multi instrumentalist and singer, known for his works predominantly in Telugu cinema. He garnered the National Film Award for the film Megha Sandesham (Best Music Score) in 1983. Introduced by C Krishnaveni (Raja of Mirzapur – Shobanachala Studios) to Telugu film industry through the movie “Dampathyam (1957), however Naidu’s debut movie as a composer was a Marathi film titled “Bandval Pahija”. Subsequently he scored an Hindi language film titled  “Hamlet” (1954) starring Mala Sinha, Kishore Sahu, Venus Banerji, Kamaljeet and Jankidas.  At the age of fourteen, under the guidance of B. R. Chopra, Naidu got trained in music instrumentation and orchestration at H. M. V. In Telugu celluloid, he was associated primarily with directors like Dasari Narayana Rao, Vijaya Nirmala and Jandhyala. His major works include Manorama, Swayamaprabha, Ganga Manga, Thoorpu Padamara, Srivariki Premalekha, Sivaranjani, Ananda Bhairavi and Swayamkrushi. After writing the musical score for the Telugu movie Manorama (1959), he relocated to Bombay. For ten years he scored music in Nepali, Bengali & Oriya films, before before returning to Telugu films with the movie Amma Mata in 1972. Composer(s) Lakshmikant Pyarelal and violinist Yanamadra Nagayagna Sarma were closely associated with him. He passed away on September 3, 1987.

The soundtrack always crossed me as alluring, evocative, riveting  and deeply sad. Written about unrequited love that can’t subsist without the other person, composer Ramesh Naidu has delivered a masterpiece that is prodigal, aggressive, and occasionally haunting yet consistently virgin in the execution. The orchestration is simply magical & the listeners captivated by the fluidity of the sound.

Strangely, this song is a bit lesser-known from the movie. Call this a “voluptuous melancholy” in the angelic & seraphic voice of the legendary P Susheela.  The lyrics by Jaladi uses some statuesque poetic similes and Susheela’s vocals mixes with the strings /woodwind to dreary a euphony of forlornness producing specific desired consequence. She travels on a symmetrical journey of emotions that leave the listener entranced. Well when you listen to the song you know (the pacing) that Susheela’s receptivity to the libretto. Susheela’s songs have a haunting quality about them because of her exquisite tone, pitch and discernment. She leaves her listeners  spellbound and in awe with this rendition

Ramesh Naidu makes this ballad his own, with his haunting acoustics, subtle guitar and mellowing piano. Susheela uses  several voice intonations to communicate the emotions – angelic, melancholy, innocent & ghostly.  Filled with agony and emotion Susheela delivers a song that may not be catchy the first time you hear it, but gradually you will find it pulling you in. This song just hits somewhere in my heart every time, her beautiful, breathtaking voice, the haunting score in the background, and the words that just seem to understand.

Such an prodigious piece of music!
